Walking for young Australians with disabilities

Club members Graham Metcalf and Sue Woodward set out on Monday 6 August on a 17km walk from Luna Park to Watsons Bay raising money for the The Dylan Alcott Foundation. The Foundation helps young Australians with disabilities overcome the barriers of entry to sport and education.
Thanks to many club members, Graham raised close to $3,000 for the Foundation. The event “Walk the Talk” was staged by ANZ.
And along the 17km walk, Graham picked up with the man himself – Dylan Alcott, ANZ Ambassador. Dylan is a multi-Olympian (basketball and tennis), winning gold in both sports. He is also the current AO men’s wheelchair champion, and Triple M host.
We now need to see him at the club … he has invited himself down!

Ladies Win Premier League Badge

Sydney’s Ladies’ Premier League Badge Final was played out on Saturday.
Lane Cove entered their first Ladies Badge Team this year and the team competed in the Premier League Grade.  The team – Sue Deller, Bernadette Brennan, Siobhan Campbell, Laura Wunderlich, Sue Woodward, Bojana Marinkov, Bree Calderwood, Lilly Logue – were placed at the top of the ladder after 10 rounds.
On Saturday they played the final against Kooroora 1. It was a closely fought match, with our ladies being up 3-1 at the half way point. Sue Deller pulled off an incredible ‘off your toes half-volley’ to secure a very important first set tie-break win in her first of two sets.  Bernie and Siobhan were red hot against the experienced pairing of Melissa Anderson and Lex Dalley splitting their first two sets.
Siobhan and Bernie grabbed sets 5 and 6 securing the rubber and the finals.  Well done ladies. A great team effort

2018 Wimbledon at Lane Cove

Wimbledon 2018 at the club was held on 1 July.  There were 40 players, two playing sessions – a morning and afternoon session, strawberries and cream, Pimms, BBQ and beers.
The format was American mixed over a playing period of two and half hours.  The dire hards of Corey Lewis, Ros Martin, Greg Sernack and Sharon Carelton played both sessions.  Our young guns of Tom Garrett and Henry McGuinness matched it with the hard hitters – Glenn Knox, Graham Metcalf, and the Whitman brothers.
Warren Welch supervised the BBQ all day, relinquishing playing duties, whilst Corey Lewis and Garry Butler performed Tournament Director duties. And thanks to Karen Matthews for serving the strawberries and cream.
The grass courts were well groomed and did not disappoint with the unexpected bad bounces.
A great day.  Check out the photos.  Until 2019.

Lots of tennis being played by our young guns.

Our scholarship holders have been practising and playing lots over the past 3 months. It has been great to see many of them at the club and even playing for the club. Here is a snap shot of what they have been up to and what they have achieved ….

Laura Wunderlich
The Jack Frazer scholarship funds assisted me in travelling to Victoria over the New Year to play in both the Geelong and Shepparton grass tournaments. Whilst warming up in Geelong prior to the tournament start date I was lucky enough to meet and train with Ian Barclay. Ian is of course well known across the tennis world for his role in coaching Pat Cash to his Wimbledon victory in 1987 and Ian was able to give me a number of valuable grass court tips. Since returning to school I have played Term 1 Divison 1 competition on Saturdays for the

Winners by a small margin

The Last Post is an inaugural inter-club with Neutral Bay that was fiercely fought out at The Neutral Bay Club on Sunday 28 January. Lane Cove fielded 20+ plus players including guns: Andrew Scanlan and Ash Radford-Sutton and scholarship players Jenna Svatos and Zac Matthews.
The team was also bolstered by some of our developing juniors, including Michael and Peter Jeregui, Jack O’Brien, Dhruv Manna, Connor Munro and Olivah Tisbury-Brown. Pairs played a round robin format per court, and based upon many careful calculations Lane Cove won by 16.53 to 16.50, claiming the Last Post Trophy for the first time.
This trophy will be on display shortly in the clubhouse.

Super Stars of Tomorrow …

While the eyes of the world are fixed on the international tennis stars coming to Australia, there’s a group of potential stars from the northern suburbs whose talent has been richly rewarded.
Eight young players, ranging from 12 to 17, have each been given a huge cheque (literally) of $2,500 as part of the Jack Frazer Memorial Scholarship from Lane Cove Tennis Club. The money will be used to support all aspects of the players’ tennis: training, tournament fees, fitness training, equipment and clothing.
The Scholarships went to young players who have realistic ambitions of playing at an elite level, either nationally or internationally. They must be hardworking, competitive but fair players, team oriented and committed to continuing both their school education and their sports.
“We read so many stories about young players with attitudes of entitlement, who are badly behaved on court, “ says LCTC director, Sue Woodward.  “This behaviour is often
